Russell Investments Canada expands multi-asset solutions for investors

Capital markets insights also lead to strategic asset allocation shifts in select multi-asset portfolios

TORONTO, May 23, 2017 Russell Investments Canada Limited (Russell Investments Canada) recently expanded the firm’s outcome-oriented multi-asset solutions to include the Multi-Asset Income Strategy (MAIS)1 fund, a multi-asset offering for Canadian investors that seeks to provide long-term capital growth while minimizing drawdowns.

MAIS targets a specific long-term objective, providing diversified exposure to both traditional and non-traditional asset classes, including equities, fixed income, real assets and absolute return portfolio segments. The investment portfolio’s asset allocation, strategies and exposures are tactically managed to control risk and respond nimbly to market opportunities.

Russell Investments Canada has also made changes to the strategic asset allocation for select Canadian multi-asset portfolios in response to high equity valuations, the potential for greater market risk, uncertain U.S. government policies and lower expected long-term returns. These changes are effective in the following multi-asset solutions: Multi-Asset Income Strategy, Multi-Asset Growth & Income and Multi-Asset Growth Strategy.

“Overall, the changes increase exposure to non-domestic markets, defensive equities, and non-traditional asset classes such as commodities,” said Greg Nott, Chief Investment Officer and Senior Portfolio Manager for Canada. “We also have expanded the sources of potential income through a broader range of fixed-income assets such as real return bonds, convertible bonds and emerging markets bonds.”

The new strategic asset allocations are as follows with arrows indicating recent increase or decrease:

Fixed Income Absolute Return Real Assets Equity
Multi-Asset Income Strategy 63% (↓) 2% (↑) 11% (↑) 24% (↓)
Multi-Asset Growth & Income 42% (↑) 10% (↓) 13% (↓) 35% (↑)
Multi-Asset Growth Strategy 20% (↑) 5% (↓) 16% (↑) 59% (↑)

Russell Investments Canada President David Steele said, “We have high conviction that many investors will be well-served by thoughtfully constructed and actively managed multi-asset portfolios. Our approach, which differs from that of typical balanced funds, offers exposure to non-traditional asset classes such as infrastructure, commodities, and high yield credit and is outcome-oriented rather than benchmark-constrained.”

As a long-time leader in multi-asset investing, Russell Investments Canada provides investors with a flexible range of multi-asset solutions, each targeting a specific long-term return objective — all in a single investment portfolio. The firm manages approximately CAD$171 billion in multi-asset AUM globally (as of 3/31/2017).

1Multi-Asset Income Strategy (MAIS) was formerly named LifePoints Balanced Income.
