Russell Investments appoints Chief Marketing Officer
30-year financial services marketing veteran Hoden to help harness the full power of firm’s storied brand to drive continued business growth and leadership in the multi-asset investing category
SEATTLE, April 10, 2017 — Global asset manager Russell Investments announced that Toby Hoden has joined the firm today as chief marketing officer (CMO). Hoden brings to the role three decades of financial services marketing experience. Most recently, he spent 13 years in a CMO role at Voya (formerly ING US) focused on asset management marketing. Hoden, who will be the first CMO in Russell Investments’ 80-year history, will report directly to CEO Len Brennan and be a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.
“Russell Investments continues to be at the forefront of innovation in providing investment solutions and risk-managed portfolios,” said Brennan. We are uniquely positioned to meet this growing need with our multi-asset investing approach. It is strategically important to invest in our brand and highlight our longstanding commitment to managing multi-asset portfolios. Toby will be instrumental in leading our global marketing efforts to ensure that we align our long-respected brand and differentiated capabilities with the more exacting demands of investors.”
In addition to Voya Investment Management, Hoden held marketing leadership roles at Chase, Citibank and OppenheimerFunds. This experience provided him with exposure to almost every facet of financial services and asset management marketing, from market research, brand tracking and investment management branding (including the launch of new investment businesses), to product management and competitive benchmarking of funds, as well as sales support and channel distribution strategy.
Commenting on his new role, Hoden said, “The opportunity to join Russell Investments is incredibly exciting. The firm has a world-class brand reputation upon which to build, a significant growth opportunity ahead, and a global team of talented investment, business and marketing professionals dedicated to helping people achieve financial security. I am looking forward to connecting investors with solutions that can make a meaningful difference to the financial outcomes they seek.”
As CMO for Voya Investment Management, Hoden was responsible for multiple aspects of marketing, including product, channel, strategic and digital marketing, as well as investment communications, thought leadership and brand communication for Voya’s institutional and intermediary businesses. Before taking on this role in 2008, he was the corporate CMO at ING US. Prior to that, he was head of Product Distribution and Marketing for ING US, which included tactical and sales-support marketing for insurance, annuities and retirement services businesses. He was also responsible for integrating marketing functions across business lines and site locations following a series of acquisitions by ING US.
Before joining Voya, Hoden spent six years in various product management and marketing roles at OppenheimerFunds, spanning both institutional and retail fund management. During this time, he developed new marketing programs targeting distribution partners and played a role in the launch of new products for the firm’s then fledgling institutional business.
“In addition to bringing deep marketing expertise, Toby also has extensive leadership and business expertise, and I am confident that this will allow him to make an immediate contribution to shaping the direction of our firm and positioning our brand for continued growth and success,” said Brennan.
