Optus data breach

ONLINE SUPER SAFETY

Following the recently reported data breach at Optus and the unfolding events around it, we wanted to let you know that we've taken some extra steps to further strengthen the safety of your super.

At this point in time, we’re not aware of any direct impact to member accounts or our systems.

However, we’re very mindful of the significant size and scale of this data breach and the potential impact of compromised personal information on member accounts.

Please know that we already have a number of security measures in place that are designed to keep your super safe and secure with us.

What you can do

You can ask us to put in extra security measures (in addition to existing measures) on your super account.

  • Add an extra password to your account – We can help you set up an additional password, separate to the password you normally use to log in to your super account. We’ll make a record of it and prompt you on it whenever you call us next or when you email us from an unregistered email address. This will add another layer of security, but it won’t impact any outgoing super payments.
  • Place a ‘stop’ instruction on your account – If you prefer, we can put in a ‘stop’ instruction on processing any super payments from your account. When you’re ready to remove the instruction, you can let us know.

If you’d like to action one or both of these safety measures, please call us on 1800 555 667.

What we’re doing

In addition to our usual security measures, we have taken additional steps to prevent and detect suspicious transactions and are closely monitoring member account activity. These steps include:

  • Further strengthening our identification process when members call us, using information that is unique to your superannuation account
  • Increased monitoring of member accounts to identify any emerging risks
  • Maintaining contact with law enforcement agencies and regulators.

Your safety online

It’s important to stay vigilant and look out for any suspicious activity, avoid engaging with unsolicited emails and SMSs, and look at increasing the protection level on all your accounts, including super.

You can check out the Online super safety webpage for more information on detecting frauds and scams, tips to keep you super safe, how to report suspicious activity and where to find reliable information on related topics.

We’re here to help

We will be in touch with you if and when there are any relevant updates.
